weevil, (family Curculionidae), true weevil of the insect[1] order Coleoptera[2] (beetles and weevils). Curculionidae is one of the largest coleopteran families (about 40,000 species). Most weevils have long, distinctly elbowed antennae[3] that may fold into special grooves on the snout. Many have no wings, whereas others are excellent fliers. Most are less than 6 mm (0.25 inch) in length, although the largest exceed 80 mm (3 inches). Although most are brown or gray, a few, like the diamond beetle Entimus of Brazil, are brightly coloured.

The majority of weevils feed exclusively on plants. The fleshy, legless larvae of most species feed only on a certain part of a plant—i.e., the flower head, seeds, fleshy fruits, stems, or roots. Many larvae feed either on a single plant species or on closely related ones. Adult weevils tend to be less-specialized in their feeding habits.
